Tips for Selecting Tiles

If you want to make an informed decision about the selection of tiles for your room, here are a few tips to help.
With the multitude of choices on the market, choosing the right tile for the right room is a challenge. There are available vitrified tiles, ceramic tiles, porcelain tiles, cement tiles, marble, stone tiles, and even glass tiles, making choices a major challenge. We have outlined a few tips to help you pick the right piece of tile for your space:

  • The first step is to determine what kind of tile you'll need. Vitrified tiles are the perfect choice for flooring, as they are durable and can withstand heavy traffic. You may choose ceramic or porcelain tiles for walls, since they are non-porous or do not absorb stains. For outdoor applications it is best to select either matt finish or anti-skid tiles to prevent slips.
  • Tiles are available in a wide variety of sizes at these days. Several common floor sizes include 300x600 mm, 600x600 mm, 610x610 mm and 800x800 mm, while wall tiles are usually 250x350 mm, 300x450 mm, and 300x600 mm in sizes. When the space is small and you are using big tiles on the floor, so the space appears even smaller.
  • With digital printing any pattern can now be recreated on a tile. The pattern and style should not be the sole deciding factor, however. Identifying the correct finish is critical too. Glossy tiles look fantastic on the walls, while stone finish tiles are ideal for outside. Wood finishes are recommended for bedrooms as they offer a warm feeling while you can play with metallics and mosaics in combination with plain tiles for bathroom and kitchen walls. Natural finishes and designs are recommended for living rooms, while it is recommended that restaurants look for anti-skid, high-resistance vitrified tiles with a pattern or a design.
  • To build a relaxed look indoors, it is generally best to opt for light colors for flooring. You should play with darker colours, for outdoors. Light colours, though dark colors are harder to maintain, make the room look more spacious and airy.
  • Often buy 5-10 per cent more tiles than you really need. This should take care of any breakages and cuts if you have any. Most businesses will give a refund on unused tiled boxes.
  • Although at one point there was a trend of using contrast grouting, it was often recommended to use a grout that suits the tile's colour. The emphasis should be on getting thin lines of grout and making them as less visible as possible.
  • While a single tile laid over a whole surface offers a more consistent and spacious look, playing with 2-3 tiles is a good idea to make your room feel personal. Boundaries and a mix of two contrasting tiles may be tested on floors. One can mix and match mosaic tiles with medium format tiles, plain metal tiles, play with patterns on one wall, and use plain tiles on the rest, and even use contrasting colors for a statement pattern. Most tile manufacturers market tile designs which are variations of pre-set tiles.
  • This is one very important technical detail that one must learn in order to appreciate the strength of the tile. Tiles with less absorption of water have a longer life, because they are more durable.
